 A telecommunications technician needs:

Strong technical skills and knowledge.

The ability to solve problems using a logical and methodical approach.

Patience when detecting a fault and looking for the best way to make repairs.

Pay attention to the details.

Knowledge of health and safety issues.

Manual dexterity to control and adjust hand tools and use tape measures, and to connect wires and small parts.

Good computer skills.

Be willing to learn and develop new knowledge, as well as keep up-to-date with advances in digital and cable television, and in telephone systems and satellite technology.

Good numerical skills, to do calculations and measurements.

Be in physical shape to lift and carry weight, and to flex, for example.

Be able to work in elevated or underground locations.

Ability to work quickly and reliably without supervision.

Work well as a team.

Good communication skills to explain breakdowns to customers, as well as being calm and professional demeanor.

Good color vision may be required to work with wiring color codes.

Many telecommunications technicians need a driver's license.
